Pathways to Research for Doctoral Students
The German university system can be particularly challenging for PhD students with a refugee or migration background, for example in regards to financing, cultural differences or a lack of social contacts. With the Pathways to Research program, we want to help and support you through your doctoral studies at the University of Bonn with a range of activities and events.
Components of the Program
Doctoral students can obtain an up to 36-month scholarship worth €1,500 per month. This can be extended for a further six months on request provided that the criteria are met.
Doctoral students will also be able to attend an extensive range of optional workshops and coaching sessions at the University of Bonn’s Argelander Competence Center. Events will be held in German or English.
Ideally, the doctoral students will get involved in the Pathways to Research buddy program from 2024 onwards and will help and support university students with a refugee or migration background on their University of Bonn journey.
Application process
When can I apply?
The next application period will be announced here.
How are participants chosen?
This is done by a selection committee made up of representatives of the various faculties. Applications will also undergo a preliminary review by a subject-specific assessor to be appointed by the Equal Opportunity and Diversity Unit.
Who can apply?
The program is for doctoral students at the University of Bonn and for universtiy graduates, who must meet the following criteria:
- No other source of financing for their doctorate (e.g. scholarship, employment subject to social security contributions)
- Refugee and/or migration background*
- Ongoing or planned doctoral studies under a first supervisor based at the University of Bonn
- Very good final grade in their degree program
- German or English at C1 level
- Initial research experience in a research project or under a professorship an advantage
Doctoral candidates do not necessarily have to be enrolled at the University of Bonn yet at the time they apply. However, they will not be able to start receiving funding under the Pathways to Research program unless they are enrolled.
* “With a migration background” means either that the person concerned was not themselves born with German citizenship or that their parents were not born with German citizenship. Doctoral candidates with a migration background must have obtained their “Abitur” in Germany in order to be eligible to apply for the program. For doctoral students with a refugee background, it is irrelevant whether the higher education entrance qualification was obtained in Germany or abroad.
